At-Home Grandparent DNA Test

A grandparent DNA test helps determine whether an individual is biologically related to one or both grandparents. It’s often used when the alleged father or mother is unavailable for testing.

Using painless cheek swabs, DNA is collected from the child and one or both grandparents. Including the mother’s DNA improves accuracy by eliminating her genetic contribution from the analysis.

The samples are analysed in our accredited laboratory using 24-marker testing to calculate the probability of a biological relationship. When both grandparents are tested, the results are often highly conclusive—typically over 99% accuracy when a relationship exists.

  • Free and discreet first class delivery via Royal Mail
  • Simple cheek swab collection
  • Fully accredited UKAS laboratory

What our customers say

Frequently asked questions

Non-invasive DNA tests — how do they work?

A non-invasive DNA test uses a simple cheek swab to collect DNA without needles or clinic visits. At AssureDNA, our sample collection kits are easy to use at home and returned to us to be analysed in our UKAS-accredited laboratory for accurate, confidential results.

What consent is required for an At-Home Grandparent DNA Test?

No test will be undertaken without the consent of each adult to be tested (unless a court has ruled otherwise). Each adult is required to sign a Consent Form. An adult is someone who is 18 years or over. A child of 16 or 17 years of age is presumed to be capable of giving consent and may give consent as if they were an adult. Each participant over the age of 16 years will need to consent for their DNA to be tested and will need to support this with a suitable copy of identification.

How long does it take to get DNA test results?

At AssureDNA, we deliver results the next working day after your samples arrive at our laboratory. With fast kit dispatch, first-class Royal Mail delivery, and efficient processing, you’ll have your answers quickly.

Are the results confidential?

Yes, under the requirements of UK Data Protection laws, all services and results are confidential. Only those conducting a test or those consenting for people in the test can see the report.

Are At-Home Grandparent DNA Test legally admissible in court?

AssureDNA offers tests for peace of mind purposes. Legal tests require strict chain-of-custody protocols. If you're looking for a legal test (for example, to use in Court), just get in touch and we can guide you through our legal testing service.

What’s included in an At-Home Grandparent DNA Test kit?

Each AssureDNA kit includes self-sampling swab packs, full instructions, a pre-paid return envelope, consent documents, and access to support. Kits are sent in discreet packaging for privacy and results are emailed securely once testing is complete.

How accurate are grandparent DNA tests?

At AssureDNA our UKAS accredited laboratory looks at 25 DNA ‘markers’ to ensure accurate and dependable results. In the event that a test is not conclusive, we are able to look at additional pieces of DNA to reach a conclusive result.

Can I find my grandparent through DNA?

The highly accurate DNA relationship testing carried out at AssureDNA cannot ‘find’ a relative for you, but we can test two individuals with a suspected biological relationship and determine whether that relationship is correct or not. Grandparent testing can be particularly useful when parental testing is not available, for example to determine paternity by testing the putative father’s parent and the child.

Can a grandparent do a DNA test?

Yes, a grandparent can take a DNA test to determine a biological relationship with their grandchild. This is particularly helpful to determine paternity when a putative father isn’t available for testing. AssureDNA’s at-home Grandparent DNA Test is simple, non-invasive, and offers results the following working day after samples have arrived at the laboratory.

How to read grandparent DNA test results?

Grandparent DNA test reports typically present the results using a likelihood ratio (LR), which indicates how much more likely it is that the tested individuals are biologically related (e.g. grandparent and grandchild) compared to being unrelated. For example, a result stating that the relationship is "1,000 times more likely if the individuals are related as grandparent and grandchild" means there is strong genetic evidence supporting the relationship. Your AssureDNA report will include a detailed explanation of your results.

Can a grandmother do a DNA test with a grandchild?

Yes, a grandmother can take a DNA test with a child to determine whether they are biologically related as grandmother and grandchild. At AssureDNA our UKAS accredited laboratory looks at 25 DNA ‘markers’ to ensure accurate and dependable results. In the event that a test is not conclusive, we are able to look at additional pieces of DNA to reach a conclusive result.
